The CDC Injury Surveillance and Prevention Program reports that in the United States, drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14.
The World Health Organization (WHO) 2003 Report on Drowning and Injury Prevention reveals that worldwide, drowning is the third leading cause of death; with boys 1-5 at twice the risk as girls.
The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (CDC 2005) reports that for every child who drowns, another four are hospitalized and 16 receive emergency department care for near-drowning.

Children ages 1-4 -most vulnerable to swimming pool drowning

According to the CDC’s 2001-2002 Child Water-Related Injuries Report: Most drownings occur in residential swimming pools among children ages 1 to 4.
From the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) 2006 Pool & Spa Safety Report on Safety Barrier Guidelines for Home Pools (Doc 362 ) reports: 75 percent of the children involved in swimming pool drowning accidents were between 1 and 3 years old
